On Tuesday, private residential ship maker Storylines and Croatian shipyard Brodosplit announced they have signed a ship building contract to create what they’re calling the world’s first environmentally conscious residential ship. The 753-foot vessel, dubbed MV Narrative, has begun its engineering phase. If the thought of a life at sea does appeal to you — and you can afford it — you certainly won't be alone. Multiple other residence shipbuilders, like The World and Clydebuilt's Dark Island, are also selling luxury suites aboard megaships for people who want to live, or even retire, on the sea. The ship also boasts "the largest wellness center at sea," which includes a spa, gym and anti-aging clinic in a 10,000-square foot space. The residences, which range in size from 237 to 1,970 square feet, are on sale now — and they aren't cheap.

In late-March 2019 Storylines released renderings for its cruise ship to be named "MV Narrative". Based on the renderings, as a potential vessel was rumored the 14-deck Grand Classica owned and operated by Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line. Apartments were then priced from USD 300,000, with an average entry US$475,000 (including the monthly service fees).

But Alister Punton, co-founder and CEO of Storylines, which will launch its first residential cruise ship in 2024 departing from Croatia, has a fix for that. The vessel is slated to begin its 1,000-night maiden voyage in late 2024. During that initial nearly three-year-long sailing, the ship will visit six continents and will stop at various ports for one to five days at a time. MV Narrative is slated to set sail in 2025 and the exact date and departure port has yet to be announced. MV Narrative will be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) which is currently the cleanest marine fuel and results in 25 percent lower carbon emissions than vessels with diesel propulsion. It will also incorporate technology to convert waste heat into energy.
The vessel will offer residents 20 dining and bar venues, as well as a number of pools. The waterfront marina (aft, lower level) includes access to personal watercraft, a bowling alley, a hydroponic garden farm and an open-air fitness area with racquet sports, a yoga sun deck and a running track. The outright purchase price for one of the accommodations starts just shy of $1 million and will go up to $8 million.
