2017In January, the Garden Conservancy submits letter supporting designation of garden as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. In April, both the house and the garden are designated official landmarks. The Gardens do not receive any municipal, county or state operating funds. The care and maintenance of the house and grounds is funded through memberships, grants, and the generous support of people who give what they can.

It embodies the rich legacy of Japanese landscape design with an emphasis on water, stones, and evergreen plants in a naturalistic setting. The Van Vleck House and Gardens was a family estate for three generations dating back to the late 1800s. There have been several previous residences on the property, including a Victorian and a Tudor mansion. The park has a stunning 5-acre rose garden, camellia collection, and a Japanese garden (complete with a koi stream that leads to the teahouse.) You’ll also see plenty of azaleas, mondo grasses, cherry, and plum trees. The L.A. Zoo’s greatest asset is its location in the isolated hills of Griffith Park. It’s a pretty popular place, but the zoo’s size—80 acres, plus a huge parking lot—means that, like the park itself, it rarely feels busy.
